Find A Coach
Wisdom is not simply knowing; wisdom is applying. Life is our classroom. Wisdom is developed daily, on our feet.
Find men and women of character that you can turn to for honest advice and counsel. There may be someone from your past that you respect and admire. Keep in touch with that person; maintain that relationship. Seek upright leaders in order to become one yourself.
Make a list of people from the past and present who have been a positive influence in your life. What set them apart? How did they make a difference in your life?
Are you sharing what you learned or gained from them with those you are influencing today?
Kerry Hannon, author of What’s Next? shared these ideas and some others on Forbes.com.
- Ask yourself what you want in a mentor or sponsor. An expert? Someone inside your workplace? In what areas do you need help?
- Steer clear of the formal request. The “Will you be my mentor?” invitation can be stiff and off-putting.
- Show them how to help. If you truly have a pressing need, take the plunge and make a specific request.
- Do something for them.
- Listen. Whether you are the mentor or mentee, you can cultivate the relationship by asking questions and sincerely listening to the answers.
